MY PRAYER ARMY IS TREMENDOUS!

My prayer army is scattered through Arizona, Arkansas, Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington state, and other states as well and over Canada. I really got blessed on Wednesday, April 22, reading about the description of this wonderful group of people by my dear Lord in Matthew 6:5-8!

It is so exciting to know that God always answers prayer! Four incredible things prove this glorious fact:

1.  WHEN THE REQUEST IS NOT RIGHT, GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS WITH A "NO."

Only God knows what is best for us. Sometimes we pray for things that might be good, but God does not want us to settle for the good when He gives only the best!

2.  WHEN THE TIMING IS NOT RIGHT, GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS WITH A "SLOW."

Many times in our humanity and haste we get overly anxious for God to answer our prayer, but only God knows the best time to answer. God never gets in a hurry, but He is never late!

3.  WHEN THE PERSON IS NOT RIGHT GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS WITH A "GROW."

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear. But certainly, God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me!” Psalm 66:18-20.

God does use situations and circumstances to cause the person to grow.

4.   WHEN THE REQUEST, TIMING, AND PERSON ARE RIGHT, GOD ALWAYS ANSWERS WITH A "GO."

These four are like a plumb bob, they line up as a straight and direct line to heaven and into the heart of God. I learned the purpose and power of the plumb bob helping my dad in his construction of houses when I was growing up.

“God answers prayer in the morning; God answers prayer at noon; God answers prayer in the evening, so keep your heart in tune.” Prayer is the key to heaven, but faith unlocks the door!

CELEBRATING THE DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD

The Easter season just past has been another opportunity to celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord once again. Ever since Bess and I made our first trip to the Holy Land in 1969, Easter has never been the same. It is impossible to walk where Jesus walked and not be transformed!  During this season we were remembering some of our tremendous highlights throughout the year and recalled the times we have spent at Caesarea by the sea. That is the place where Paul the Apostle stood before King Agrippa to give such a powerful testimony of his faith in Christ that Agrippa was so convicted that he said, “Almost you persuade me to be a Christian.” Every time I have stood in that very spot in the huge Roman Amphitheater, it has been an unforgettable experience. I have tried to illustrate that moment for all the people traveling with us. It is very close to that location that our guide, Saad, cut a limb from a crown-of-thorns bush to illustrate the pain our Lord felt when the Romans placed the crown-of-thorns on His head. It is no wonder that the blood of our Lord flowed down His face. The thorns are sharper than pins or nails. It is hard to touch them without pricking your skin.

The most meaningful communion experience is to partake of the Lord’s supper at the tomb of Jesus. I have had that opportunity ten times, Bess nine. Once we were given an incredible spot in the beautiful garden by the keepers of the garden. My group was seated very close and facing the empty tomb of Jesus. To say the least, it really was a transforming moment for all of us! What a place to renew our faith in the resurrected Christ!

Mount Olivet is a glorious place to visit in the Holy Land. It overlooks the Eastern gate and the golden dome. It is the location of Mt. Moriah where Abraham took Isaac to be sacrificed and where God gave a lamb to take the place of Isaac. It really is breathtaking to stand in that holy place where our Lord will return to earth again. It is by the way of Olivet that our Lord ascended back to heaven after his resurrection. It is where two angels appeared to the disciples of Jesus as He was leaving going back to heaven, saying to them, “This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven.” I say with John the Revelator, “Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!” Now is the time for people to prepare for the Lord’s return. Our world is falling apart. Only Jesus has the answer! “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?”

MEMORIES OF EASTER

Since we are in the Easter season once again my mind is flooded with memories of Easters past. Through my pastoral journeys, I have always planned to make the Easter season and Easter Sunday a time to remember. As I am reviewing in my mind highlights of the past Easters, two are at the very top. Without a doubt, the Easter Sunday that 125 people, by actual count, came forward seeking Christ in the morning and evening services, will always be the Easter to remember. As I write these lines, I can still see the amazing sight of people flooding the front of the church during the invitation seeking Christ. Some of these were hardened sinners! What a memory!

The greatest Easter crowd in my pastoral ministry happened on Easter morning. Over 3,400 people were present and 35 came forward seeking Christ at the invitation. Precious memories of the sight in the rented municipal auditorium are flooding my soul!

The third event in my life did not happen at Easter, but because of Easter. It was on one of my Holy Land trips I cannot forget. It involved a young Catholic priest that for some reason, was attracted to me after I had given a devotional to my group about the resurrection of Jesus. We had just visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Catholics believe it is the burial site of Jesus. As we stood at the entrance to the tomb in the garden of the empty tomb in Gordon’s Calvary, the priest asked me to go inside the tomb with him. An amazing thing happened as we had gone inside. He began to cry and say, “Charles, this is the place, not the other one!” Since he was a Roman Catholic Priest, that made an impression on me that I have carried with me through these years. Of course, I agreed with him, that the real empty tomb of Jesus is in Gordon’s Calvary Garden and not in the other place.

Easter is the season to celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord. Darrel Gash and the RFC Singers will be featured in an inspiring Easter musical on Saturday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m.

THE RICHES OF SPIRITUALITY

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and runs through Easter Sunday. It goes without saying, this Holy Week is unlike all others in my lifetime due to COVID - 19. It really is a wonderful time to consider The Riches of Spirituality.

There are many highlights on a tour of the Holy Land. One of these is the Palm Sunday walk from Mount Olivet to the Garden of Gethsemane. It has been my privilege to take that walk 10 times. It is a transforming experience! I believe our Lord illustrated the riches of spirituality when He took that walk. He had two choices: one led to an earthly kingdom and throne as Matthew’s gospel describes it in Matthew 21, and the other led to an eternal heavenly home and throne. One was a low road and the other was a high road that included you and me. Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter is an incredible and glorious time for the family of our Lord to celebrate!

The wise man Solomon has a tremendous word for us in these days of spiritual decline. The first thirteen verses of Proverbs chapter four are inspired by the Holy Spirit to give us the riches of spirituality. As we review some of these riches that are given to the people who have made their souls the guestroom of spiritual religion, we can see they will be transforming if we apply them to our personal lives. Without a doubt, they are keys to a revival that is urgently needed in the Church of these last days.

Solomon says in verse 6 “Love her and she will keep you.” Without a doubt, spirituality is to be my true defense. All other ramparts are vulnerable. They are the happy hunting-ground of the ravages of time; they fail in the crisis; they are the sure victims of moth and rust. But spirituality keeps me from childhood to age, and its shields are invincible, even in the hour of death. Solomon says, “She will preserve you.”

In verse 8 Solomon says, “Exalt her, and she will promote you.” It really is great to know that she will lead me in the paths of progress. Every day she will lead me to new conquests, and in constantly enriching character I shall move towards life’s appointed goal. The holiness of heart and life is the only success worth having. Other successes are like lamps whose trembling flames are blown out in the first gusty, stormy night. “But the path of the just is as a shining light that shines more and more even unto the perfect day.”

To highlight the benefits of the riches of spirituality Solomon says in verse 9 “She will place on your head an ornament of grace.” Yes, and her adornments are always beautiful! No beauty ever steals into the human face comparable with the delicate presence of spirituality. It makes plain features lovely and transfigures them with the glory of the Lord.

Dear Lord, help us to experience the riches of spirituality now more than ever!

HOW SHORT IS OUR TIME ON EARTH?

The recent happenings in our world and nation have caused me to ask four very important questions. The Atmosphere in the world today makes me ask, how short is our time on earth? The Events of the world make me ask, how short is our time on earth? The Diseases of the world today make me ask, how short is our time on earth? The Understanding of God’s Word leads me to ask, how short is our time on earth?

Turning to the book of James in the New Testament, the Apostle James gives us important answers to these questions in James chapters 4 and 5. As we look at these Scriptures they should convince you and me that our time is very short on the earth.

  1. James tells us time is short because of the brevity of life. He writes about it in verses 13-17 in chapter 4.

  • “Come now” - see here, here are the facts

  • “Today or tomorrow” - the future tense represents the belief that Tomorrow is sure

  • “Vapor” - a puff of steam

  • “If the Lord wills” do not look at life without the perspective of God

  • “Boast in your arrogance” - extravagant boasting that one cannot fulfill

  • We are living in sin if we do not obey what our Lord has said!

  • Notice what the Scripture is instructing us about in our physical life:

    • Your time is not in your hands

    • God’s time clock may be different than ours. Death is no respecter of persons

    • Your perspective of life is only accurate when viewed as temporary

2. The emptiness of material possessions James writes about in chapter 5:1-6 demonstrates that our time on earth is short. James wants us to know that the life we have becomes empty when we invest our time only in obtaining more possessions. They will all rot! Real meaning in life is found in sharing, not hoarding our possessions.

3. James is telling us in chapter 5:7-11 that time on earth is short because of the coming of the Lord Jesus back to earth again.

  • “Be patient” - Keep an attitude that can endure delay, and that can "bear suffering and never give up”

  • “Lord is at hand” - Just a matter of time

  • “Do not grumble” - stop your groaning and critical spirit

  • “Judge is standing at the door” - Be on guard

  • “Prophets and Job" - they leave great examples for us

I really do believe that the present events happening in our world are a forecast of Armageddon! I have two questions for all of us that are being impacted with Coronavirus:

  • Are you ready to die?

  • Are you ready for Jesus to come again?

No one can change this fact. Jesus really is coming back to earth again for His Church, blood-washed and Spirit-filled!

BLUE SKIES COMING!

The present conditions of our world and especially our nation, are impacting all of us at this time. Since Bess and I are small business owners with two rental cabins in the Smoky Mountains, we are trusting our Lord to guide us through all the challenges we are experiencing with our renters. Prior to the arrival of the CORONAVIRUS, we had a wonderful slate of rentals booked in both of our cabins through the 2020 year. We were so grateful to our dear Lord for His abundant blessing in this stage of our retirement period. As a matter of fact, every morning in our devotional time we have given our Lord praise and thanksgiving. Since the CORONAVIRUS got into high gear, we have received several cancellations that have caused us much concern. Even though our cabins are in a tremendous location, we certainly understand the concerns people may have.

A wonderful thing happened Thursday morning, March 19, as I was returning from the Publix market. My car radio was on the Enlighten Christian music network with the Perrys singing one of their most requested songs. I really do believe the Holy Spirit had moved into the vacant seat that was beside me as I listened to the Perrys sing a song I have heard them sing many times at Saturday Nights In Lakeland…

Sometimes this world feels like a place

Where I don’t want to be

I feel so out of place here

‘Cause it’s just not home to me

But for now, I’ll tarry here

Though the shadows dim my eyes

I can feel my spirit rise

We’re all too often troubled

But never in distress

We are never in despair

Although bewildered I confess

But in spite of persecution

That the enemy deploys

We are not forsaken here

Cast down, but not destroyed

There are blue skies coming

Though the clouds are dark and gray

Though the thunder and the lightning

Say a storm is on the way

We’ve been promised sweet deliverance

If we trust Him and obey

There are blue skies coming any day

Ladies and gentlemen, I know my Lord wanted the Perrys to minister to me once again with the incredible message in that song. I could hardly wait to get home to share with Bess how the Holy Spirit was really impacting my spirit with His dynamic and victorious presence! By now tears were flowing as we embraced, praising our Lord. It was time for our daily morning devotions from Hebrews chapter 11, God’s Honor Roll. It really was amazing timing for Bess and me, following my experience with the Perrys. We read about Abraham, that faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One Who is leading.

During this trying time all of us are encountering, may we let the Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11 teach us to walk by faith and not by sight, that there is a better day coming! Our Lord will help us to walk and not faint, looking for Blues Skies!

God really is on His Throne and on our side!

THE POWER OF SPIRITUAL TENACITY

Recently Bess and I had Psalm 46 in our morning devotions. I must admit I had failed through the years to feast on the tremendous message in this wonderful Psalm. Hidden in the eleven verses is the discipline of spiritual tenacity. I came to realize that tenacity is more than endurance, it is endurance combined with absolute certainty that what we are looking for is going to transpire. Calm confidence and triumphant trust breathe in every line of this Psalm of experience that Martin Luther used to love to sing, and which gave birth to that stirring battle hymn: “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”

I discovered a brand new sermon that I had never noticed before in these inspired verses. The Power of God is in verses 1-3; The Presence of God is in verses 4-7, and The Peace of God is in verses 8-11. Digesting this Psalm, I am coming to know what it is to make this our very own  Psalm that is so perfectly simple in its meaning, and joyous in expression. Our right conception must be of God banishing all fear. As thrones, governments, and systems change so rapidly these days, may we be still and know that our God reigns! It is a fact that we must believe, tenacity is the supreme effort of a person refusing to believe that our Hero is going to be conquered. There is nothing noble the human mind has ever hoped for or dreamed of that will not be fulfilled because our God reigns!

FLORIDA HOLINESS CAMP MEETING

Lakeland is home to the Florida Holiness Campground. The 95th annual camp meeting has just ended a few days ago. Every year from November through March people from several states and Canada come to enjoy the warm sunshine of Lakeland and to experience worship services in the large tabernacle. Some of the most outstanding preachers through the years have been featured as the camp meeting preachers. One of the most popular was Dr. Lawrence B. Hicks from Kentucky. He was known as the silver tongue orator. He is remembered for his great sermon, “There Must Be A Heaven Somewhere!” When he came to Lakeland through the years he was always requested to preach that powerful sermon. It was the type of sermon that inspired the saints of God to shout the isles, and shout they did!

Florida Holiness Campground is located on the busy and congested South Florida Avenue. When the location was chosen 95 years ago it was at the edge of Lakeland surrounded by orange groves. I have heard many stories about the unpaved roadway and country setting of the campground. Today there is a mobile home park, dormitories, and a nice lodge to accommodate the people that come to enjoy a spiritual retreat through the winter season. The tabernacle, the center of the spiritual activities, will seat around 1,000 people. It has been an honor for me to be invited to preach in that holy place several times.

It is a joy for Bess and me to drop in for a service from time to time. The people know us well and always treat us with kindness and appreciation. It really is a heartwarming experience for us. So many of these people faithfully attended the Saturday Nights In Lakeland services when we were at Lake Gibson Church.

Our friend, Dr. Ted Lee, is the president of the Florida Holiness CampGround. He is serving his first year after being chosen by the camp meeting board last year. He and his wife, Beverly, are a wonderful couple. They have experience with Nazarene district campgrounds through the years. Great things are already happening since his election last year.

Called unto Holiness, Church of our God!

Another beautiful season of the year is upon us.  Oh, how lovely is God’s creation. How lovely is His order...are His seasons.  Spring inspires us to open doors; breathe fresh air; listen to the robins sing; take a walk, view the budding trees, bushes, and flowers.  Spring puts the desire in us to plant something...more flowers or a veggie garden. Oh, what joy Spring brings.

Spring invigorates us.  It makes school students long for classes to be over, school to be out.  We are restless. Some would call it “Spring Fever.”  New life springs up everywhere.

Spring is a beautiful picture; an illustration of God’s Redemption.  We were dead in the cold snowy Winter of sin, but made new, made alive in the colorful, flowering Spring of atoning blood.

HERE ARE PICTURES OF SPRING AROUND OUR CABINS.

Why not plug in your vocal microphone and sing the song of Spring.  It’s a new day, a new season! He’s alive and I’m forgiven. Heaven’s gates are open wide.  He’s alive. He’s alive!

Dying to LIVE,

After Easter, somebody needs to testify.  So here I go.  I love music. I love to play the piano and sing.  So I want to sing praise to the Lord every day for what He’s done for me.  I want the world to know that I do believe in a hill called Mt. Calvary.  I do believe that the Man on the middle cross was God incarnate, Jesus the Son of God, my Redeemer; that He suffered such cruelty, shame, and awful pain to pay my sin debt.  I should have been crucified; but Jesus, God’s Son took my place. So, why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come?  I will arise and SING PRAISE TO THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD.  Sing along with me today.

O WHAT LOVE, THAT

HE WOULD DIE FOR ME.

Harkness

What a week I’ve had, rejoicing in the finished work of Christ.   Page 88 in SING TO THE LORD, the Nazarene hymnal, you’ll find these words, written by C. Bishop and Robert Harkness (1880-1961).  They are my testimony. I hope they are yours, as well. Redemption is always available. Just call on His name. Repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

That God should love a sinner such as I

Should yearn to change my sorrow into bliss

Nor rest till He had planned to bring me nigh,

How wonderful is love like this!

That for a willful outcast such as I

    The Father planned, the Saviour bled and died;

Redemption for a worthless slave to buy

Who long had law and grace defied!

    And now He takes me to His heart a son;

He asks me not to fill a servant’s place.

    The “far-off country” wanderings all are done;

Wide open are His arms of grace!

    Such love, such wondrous love!

    Such love, such wondrous love!

That God should love a sinner such as I

How wonderful is love like this!

Thank God for the plan of salvation.  Thank Him for His amazing grace. I’ve been adopted; no longer an outcast; redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.  Hallelujah! HE IS RISEN, INDEED!!!

It’s PALM SUNDAY, April 5, 2020;

and

There’s excitement in the streets of Jerusalem!

One can just imagine tourism’s “high season” during Palm Sunday, Easter, and the Passover in the HOLY LAND.  Old Jerusalem’s roads teem with a multitude of people from all over the world. And a big host of them is on that narrow street, the Via Dolorosa.  People are everywhere, in alleys, around market stalls, spying a bargain, taking photos, just following the crowd, getting caught up in this wonderful season of the year.

People’s desire to walk in Jesus’ footsteps is fulfilled as the streets have changed very little since His time.  Jerusalem fills with people from all nations and religions. Individuals take hold of what they can by sight and sound and, in their mind, heart, and spirit, they worship because they know that they may not pass this way again.  No doubt, you can sense the excitement in Jerusalem’s streets. Please pause here. Get the Spirit yourself as you listen to the YouTube of Larry Ford singing “The Holy City” with the Gaither group while they were in the Holy Land seven years ago.  WOW!

Contemplate what Jesus did for us, the price He paid, as we go through Holy Week.

Blog # 53 APRIL 7, 2018

BUT GOD…

Do we realize?  Do we remember that God makes all the difference in the world?  What’s your dilemma today? What seems to be affecting your joy?  Are you experiencing trouble today? Just look up and live! Just remember, God makes the difference.  He will never fail you. He makes all things work for your good.

Annie Johnson Flint, the Christian poet of the yesteryears' wrote about God’s promises.

“God hath not promised skies always blue,

Flower strewn pathways all our lives through;

God hath not promised sun without rain,

Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.”

“But God hath promised strength for the day,

Rest for the labor, light for the way,

Grace for the trials, help from above,

Unfailing sympathy, undying love.”

If you are lower than a snake’s belly today;  if you are discouraged; if trouble abounds on every hand, PLEASE don’t despair.  Turn to Jesus. He cares for you. He is able to see you through. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that, “They that wait upon the Lord SHALL renew their strength; They SHALL mount up with wings, like eagles; they SHALL run and not be weary; they SHALL walk and not faint.”

I’m putting God in my equation; how about you?

GOD’S BUCKET OF BLESSINGS

God has provided for all of us, a blessings bucket.  I’m wondering this morning, do you know where the bucket is?  Do you know what’s in the bucket? Are you aware of God’s goodness, His mercy, His favor, His amazing grace?  I could go on and on; but it’s your time to “Count your many blessings, see what God has done.”

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed; when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, count your many blessings - name them one by one - and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.”

BBs for a BB gun

Barbara Johnson, author, and inspirational speaker, in her book, “Joy Breaks,” tells about the time she bought some new make-up.  The salesgirl told her that if she would drop a single BB in the bottle and shake it before each use, the make-up wouldn’t get thick and gooey. (Yes, a BB!) So she asked her husband for one BB.  Of course, he wanted an explanation. She gave him the explanation; yet, she wondered if the BB would do the trick.

A day or so later, her husband brought home a huge plastic carton.  Inside were 10,000 BBs. “They only come in tens of thousands,” he told her.  She smiled appreciatively and took ONE.

Many moons and much later, she saw THAT PLASTIC CARTON full of 9,999 BBs laying on a shelf in the garage. Inspiration flooded her mind as to the magnitude of the number of them; as she thought, how much it’s like God’s riches, His blessings.  They are as the sand of the sea. They are new every morning. They never run out. The bucket always overflows. She thought, “We have more than enough. We have more than we’ll ever be able to use.” We have forgiveness, grace, mercy, love, protection, hope, blessings, supply, rest, help, abundant resources just waiting for us to use.  And yet, we let them sit in the plastic carton out in the garage; or, let them stay closed up, recorded in God’s Holy Word.

A word to the wise should be sufficient.  If life gets gooey, stale, stressed to the max, we have NO EXCUSE; because, God’s blessings bucket is available.  It overflows. There’s a blessing for every need, every circumstance, every situation. Remember the widow of Zarephath; her oil and flour were about to run out...BUT IT DIDN’T!  When you live in obedience to God, the jar of oil NEVER runs dry; and, the bowl of flour NEVER becomes empty.

So, to finish off this analogy, put some BBs (God’s riches, His blessings) in your circumstance; in your stressed day.  Mix them up and see what God will do! He will make a way where there seems to be no way. Great is His faithfulness.

Getting my 9,999 BBs out of the garage and keeping them close, as I  reach into God’s Bucket of Blessings,

Bess

(Part 1 of 2)

MORE AND MORE AND MORE, I’M FEELING THE BURDEN OF A COUNTRY (A WORLD) BELEAGUERED AND TORMENTED BY SIN… a world created by God without sin, originally.  But sin entered that Garden of Paradise, and my, how it has spread. In fact the whole earth fails to see the glory of God; instead, it is blinded by Satan.  Sin has covered the earth.

God, through His Son, Jesus Christ, paid the penalty for the sins of the whole human race.  For 2000 or so years, man has had the free will and the opportunity to choose redemption OR languish in his/her sins.  But just as Judas rejected redemption, so have many...too many. We NEED TO PRAY.

Sin has spread like fast-growing cancer.  It has consumed the mind, emotion, will, and actions of its subjects. Oh, how we need that healing balm of Gilead.  O God, heal us of this devastating cancer of sin.

Where are God’s people?  Where is the church? Where are the prayer warriors? Where are the burdened?

Dear Jesus, please help us! We are desperate. Save our nation, our world. Your Word tells us that You are not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  Send a great revival, worldwide! May Your amazing grace and plenteous mercy win the hearts of the lost. May our prayers send conviction upon the lost. Help us, Jesus, to stand in the gap for our nation, our world. Amen.

All one has to do is read the newspapers and watch the news on TV to know the dire sickness of a town, a city, a county, a state, a nation, even a world.
